Lady of Wisdom Interview - Mrs. Robin Brookshire

As a kick off to the "Pursuing Wisdom" Series, here is an interview with a wise woman of God. Take it in and learn from someone who has gone before us. Enjoy!

Robin is a homeschooling mama to her two "dahling" teen daughters, a wife to her sweetie for 24 years, and a lover of the life the Lord has blessed her with. She is a wise, older woman who has graciously agreed to share her insights with us.

Sarah: I know from your blog that you are a stay-at-home. Why did you choose this "career?"

Robin: My husband and I were not Christians when we married and we were living a sinful, selfish lifestyle. When I became pregnant with Breezy I would have liked to have stayed at home, but my husband didn't see how we would manage on one income and I didn't really know very many moms who did stay home, so I just kept working. Also, while I was pregnant with Breezy the Lord saved me and began to change who I was. Two years later I had Emily Rose and I continued to work. It was increasingly difficult to manage everything, and my relationship with my husband was strained due to the fact that I wanted him to go to church with me and he was not at all interested.

As the Lord changed me more and more, I realized I needed to be more loving to my husband and not be nagging him about "everything". Rob began to notice a difference in me and actually started attending church with us. He was saved about 6 months later.
As the months went by I really wanted to stay at home with our girls, but Rob still didn't see how we could live on one income. This became a sore topic between us. When the girls were 5 and 3, I gave up talking to Rob about it and one Sunday after church, I asked the Lord to show me that if He really wanted me to stay at home then He would have to change Rob's mind about it, I was tired of talking about it.

The VERY NEXT DAY, after we had both come home from work Rob told me that the Lord had really broken his heart that day and made him realize that all our daughters knew was getting up in the mornings and going to the babysitter and that someone else was watching them grow up. I began to cry and praise the Lord. It still makes me cry. The next day I gave my notice at work that I was quitting and going home.

That was over 12 years ago and while it can be a struggle to live on one income, we are much better off financially now than we ever were when we both worked. There is not enough money in this world that would tempt me to give up these years that I have been able to be at home with our girls. It had to be in the Lord's timing and we had to learn the lessons that He had for us.

Sarah: That’s amazing - what a testimony! Now, for us mom’s trying to figure it out, please tell us what kinds of things you did to train your children in the Lord?

Robin: When they were young I would always read to them Bible stories at bedtime. I would also help them to memorize scriptures. After we started homeschooling, I found so many more resources to use. I would read to them a lot of character training stories, the Bible, Polished Cornerstones and other materials from Doorposts. I had them copy out scripture and read from God's word daily as they worked through their school work.
Sarah: What are some "tools" in your tool kit of parenting that worked for you?

Robin: I began to read and listen to anything that I could on training and raising children in the Lord. I was always sharing what I learned with my husband and we were just trying to learn because we really didn't know how to do it.

One thing I heard on Focus on the Family when I first came home was the idea of "first time obedience". Sadly, I hadn't heard that before. The idea was that when you tell your child what they need to do, if they hesitate at all you then ask them, "When do you obey?" Their response should be, "The first time". Then you ask them, "Who do you obey?" Their response should be, "Daddy and Mommy". While we weren't always perfect with this, it definitely set a precedent.
The more you discipline and train your children when they are young the less work you will have to do in this area when they are older.

I also liked the saying "Act, don't react". I put that on my refrigerator so it would be a constant reminder.

Sarah: What would you do over if you could?

Robin: A lot of things, mainly that Rob and I would have been Christians our whole lives and not wasted a large part of our lives on selfish pursuits. I wish I knew more about parenting and homemaking early on. You can become a homemaker and parent without training, but there is much to learn and it would be a great benefit to learn before all the responsibilities are added. You could think of it as someone learning to play the piano on stage in front of an audience. If the pianist had learned and practiced before taking to the stage everyone involved would have a more pleasant experience. I wish that I could have been more patient. Whiile I have improved, I still need a lot of work in that area.

If I had known how truly fast time would fly by that I would have enjoyed the little moments even more. The old saying "The days are long, but the years are short" is so true. (I would repeat that to myself sometimes when it seemed like an incredibly long day.)

Sarah: Did you have family worship/devotion time? If so, how did you do this?

Robin: My husband, Rob, started out with a devotional book that his grandmother had given him when he was little. It had stories and a bible verse to go along with it. Since then we have used Our 24 Family Ways by Clay Clarkson, Hidden Treasures by Doorposts, Training Hearts Teaching Minds by Starr Meade. Rob is now in the process of reading through the Bible. This will take close to 2 years, as he reads just a chapter or two a night.

We started off singing hymns, with Rob playing the guitar as we sang. We went to a church for several years that sang Psalms, so we incorporated that into our family worship time.
Our typical family worship now consists of us singing a Psalm, praying before we read God's word, Rob reading the Bible passage, discussion of the passage (sometimes in-depth, other times very little discussion) and then each of us taking turns praying. This of course, would look somewhat different with different-age children.

One of the many blessings of having a regular family worship, especially with younger children, is getting them in the habit of sitting still and listening to God's word. This would be a benefit for them when it comes time to go to church. They have practiced all week with the concept of being still and listening. This training will help them be able to be a part of the worship service.

Sarah: Any advice for stay-at-home moms who feel like they've lost themselves as women?

Robin: This is such an important question to talk about. The idea of losing yourself in your family and not having an identity is really a lie from Satan and the world. Being a mother is the most noble job a woman can do. You are caring for the children that God has blessed you with. He gave them specifically to you and your husband to train and raise them in the Lord, for His glory.

There is nothing more important. Women in this age struggle with this issue because of what the world is constantly telling them, that your worth is what you do outside of your home and apart from your family. There is also the struggle within each one of us to feel important or that others leaving their homes are living a more fulfilling and exciting life than we are. Again, this is a lie that we can fall into if we are not thinking biblically.

Titus 2:3-5 tells us that the women are to love their husbands, love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands so that the word of God will not be dishonored. God's word is clear here. You cannot make it mean something else. God's word does not tell us to find our worth in our careers or even ourselves. To think that you are losing yourself is an unbiblical thought.

Being a homemaker and mother is a ministry, it is our calling. As we serve our family, love them, and care for them we are bringing glory to God and finding fulfillment in serving Him.

Sarah: Our "ministry" of being homemakers can get pretty exhausting, especially with little ones! How did you make time and have energy for your husband?

Robin: Coming home out of the work place made such a difference in this area. While I was working I felt torn in too many different directions and I don't think I handled this area very well. I always knew that after the girls were in bed that we could have some quiet time for the two of us. That didn't work out every night, but that was the goal. There will be days when you will be exhausted from caring for your little ones, but it won't always be like that. If it seems like you aren't getting any relief than perhaps some changes need to take place in what is going on through the day.

When the girls were younger, I always made the girls have a rest after lunch. Whether it was a nap or looking at books, they had to stay on their bed and be quiet for an hour. We gradually worked up to that starting at 10-15 minutes. It gave me a chance to rest, read or just be still for awhile through the day.

Sarah: What is the greatest thing you've learned in how to be a good wife?

Robin: I think reading The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace was very helpful for me in becoming a good wife. She explains how our thought life really effects our actions and words. We can change our ungodly thoughts to biblical thoughts and become a blessing to our husband instead of a curse. Reading this book and trying to apply these principles made a huge impact on our marriage.

Sarah: What is your favorite "cheap" date?

Robin: We really don't have dates. I know that may sound awful to some, but we just really enjoy staying at home. My husband works hard all day and doesn't really enjoy getting back out and going anywhere and I am pretty much a homebody so it works for us.

Sarah: If you could pass on one piece of wisdom for young wives and moms, what would that be?

Robin: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding (Jer. 17:9). In all your ways acknowledge Him (Matt. 6:33), and He will make your paths straight (Ps. 119:33-35, 105) Prov.3:5-6.

God's word needs to be your standard for everything. While we are weak He is strong. 2 Cor. 12:10. You can do all things through Jesus who gives you strength. (Phil 4:13)

Those are some of my favorite passages of scriptures, ones that I have cherished. I would encourage you to be in God's word daily. To read, study and pray every day. You may think that you don't have time for a quiet time with the Lord and that all your responsibilities are keeping you too busy. I want to ask you, why do you have all these responsibilities? Are they not from the Lord? Are your children not from the Lord? Is your husband not from the Lord? The Lord who gives all these blessings and gives you every breath commands us to seek Him. Psalm 63:1-8, Psalm 1, Proverbs 1,2,3 are just a few of the many passages throughout God's word that speak of seeking Him and spending time meditating on His word.

How you do this in your daily walk with the Lord will look different in each of our homes. We all have different families, homes and schedules, but the important thing is to do it. I truly believe that if you want your children to have a relationship with the Lord and to grow in Him, then we need to model that for them. Your children will grow up someday and be raising your grandchildren and future generations, what will they have as a foundation? as a standard?
I want to also encourage you to cherish your family. As you look at your husband and children cherish them. Embrace what the Lord has given you as a ministry and run the race with endurance. Hebrews 12:1-3.

Sarah: Thank you so much for passing on your wisdom, knowledge and insight! You are a blessing to us young women!

Series: Pursuing Wisdom

Wisdom is "more precious than jewels," (Proverbs 3:15) and the "beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom..." (Proverbs 4:7)

Over the coming week I am going to pour over the scriptures and seek out everything I can on wisdom. However, I am not going to attempt an exhaustive study of wisdom. My goal is to learn from the scriptures what God says wisdom is and how I should live it out. Please feel free to correct me if I get something wrong, or add something as you see fit. I hope we can learn together how to be lady's of wisdom.

Twas a Success

I'm back again to update you on how the cooking challenge went for me. I'm so happy to say that it went great and was a success!!

I decided on making orange herb poppy seed chicken over cheddar cheese rice. Yummo! It turned out great and my husband devoured it. I realized that when you put your mind to something and really work hard you can definitely accomplish anything. It's a great a feeling to know that I am working on this now and I am preparing myself for the future. I really like what Robin said today on the interview with Sarah:

"You can become a homemaker and parent without training, but there is much to learn and it would be a great benefit to learn before all the responsibilities are added. You could think of it as someone learning to play the piano on stage in front of an audience. If the pianist had learned and practiced before taking to the stage everyone involved would have a more pleasant experience. "

That really hit home for me and that's why I'm going to keep trying. God never gives up on us and for that I am thankful. Thanks for all your support and I'll be back next week to let you know how cooking is going for me when I try out another new recipe!

By the way, my digital camera broke, hence, no pictures. Sorry!

Fall-in-Love Friday!

Get a book, like The Book of Questions, and get to know your sweetie even better! (If you can't get this book, or one similiar even at a library, then make up your own questions - think deep, and come up with some out-of-the ordinary ones).

You can take this book with you out to eat, out to the park, or sitting at home curled up with each other.

Have fun!

Have a great date idea? Post about it on your blog and then link back to it here so we can all benefit from some fresh date ideas!

Today's Toddler Time - Oooey, Gooey

Grab a ziplock bag, some hair gel, food coloring, and glitter/sprinkles. Put it in all in the ziplock bag and let your toddler move it around, make letters, etc. The bigger the bag the better!

Today's Life-giving Challenge - Take a Meal

Make and take a meal to someone today. Surprise them! Who do you know that could use a blessing?

Did you know...

The decaffeination of coffee is often done by processing companies, and the extracted caffeine is usually sold to the pharmaceutical industry.

What I want to know is, why would anyone want to take the caffine out of coffee? :)

Selfishness

Who is first in my life? I am. I put myself first all too often. Selfishness, that’s its name.

Why don’t I take the time to make healthy lunches? Selfishness.
Why don’t I make sure that my kids teeth are brushed twice a day, everyday? Selfishness.
Why don’t I perform my tasks as a homemaker diligently? Selfishness.
Why don’t I give my husband the respect I should? Selfishness.
Why do I spend more time on my own pursuits than in teaching and discipling my children? Selfishness.
I could go on and on...

The point is, I am not giving up my rights. I am clinging to myself, instead of dying to myself.

I must release my "rights" to Him, everyday. My heart is His; my life is His.

Thank God for His grace.

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature
God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature
of a servant..." Philippians 2: 5-7

Toddler Time - The 10 Commandments

Teach your sweeties the Ten Commandments by using the tune from "Doe-Re-Mi" from The Sound of Music. Here it goes:

One, worship only God

Two, no graven images

Three, don't take God's name in vain

Four, the sabbath is for rest

Five, honor mom and daddy

Six, don't ever murder

Seven, be faithful to your spouse

And don't steal, don't lie, and don't wish for others' things.

(Hey, I memorized them this way too!)

Today's Life-giving Challenge - Laundry

I really did try to do the whole "one load of laundry a day" thing suggested by the flylady, but wouldn't ya know, the days just went on by and my dirty clothes managed to stay right in the laundry basket! However, doing the laundry isn't my big hurdle, it's folding it and putting it away. I've really got to get on the laundry train.

Today's Life-giving Challenge:

Do as much laundry as you possible can today, but DO NOT go onto the next load until you have folded and put away the first one!!!! This is very important, otherwise you might have baskets of clean laundry that stay in the baskets, get wrinkley, and then you just end up washing them again! (Yea, you know who you are.) So get moving! I'll tell you how many I get done...how many did you get done?

Great laundry tips

The Power of His Word

Once again, I am blown away by the power of God’s Word. You would think I’d remember that His Word is "living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit...", but all too often I forget. When I do not spend time with God, in the scriptures, I leave myself to my own devices - my own thoughts and rationalizations. Things begin to seem unclear, and God fades into the distance. Doubts arise, questions lurk, and the evil one smiles. Even after just a few minutes of reading my bible, I am filled with His spirit and in awe of the truth and potency of it.

His Word brings light to the darkness. Without Him I am blind. I need His light every day, every moment. I cannot see by opening my own eyes, but rather, I need my heart to be enlightened. Paul, in Ephesians 1, prayed for us that our hearts "may be enlightened to the hope of His calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power towards us." I must, if I am to survive, daily drink of the living water that His Word offers.

The fruits of spending time in the scriptures, learning and obeying them (Psalm 19:7-11):

  • Our soul is restored (the enemies of God become His children)

  • The simple will become wise

  • Our hearts will rejoice

  • Our eyes will be enlightened

  • We receive warning

  • There is great reward

What we know about His Word (Psalm 19:7-11, 2 Timothy 3:16):

  • It is pure

  • It endures forever

  • It is true and righteous altogether

  • It is more desirable than gold and sweeter than honey

  • It is inspired by God

  • It is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness

Let us not forget these truths when we step out of the light. In fact, let us not step out of the light at all! Let’s commit to spending our first hours awake with the One who knows the deepest parts of our very being. You and I both know that the rushes of the day will most likely sweep us away if we don’t sit at His feet first thing.

Let’s do this together. See you bright and early!

So Funny!

Kissable women, eh?

Random Fact of the Day - A Woman on Mount Rushmore?

In 1937 a bill was introduced in Congress to add the head of civil-rights leader/feminist Susan B. Anthony to Mount Rushmore. However, another bill was passed that said that federal funds would only pay to finish the heads that had already been started at the time, therefore, no Ms. Anthony. (Weird, huh?)

God's Will

Good Morning!

Ever wonder what God’s will is for your life? Well, here it is, in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18:

"Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

Isn’t that amazing?! Right there, tucked away in a tiny little verse is what God’s will is for us:
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks. Could it be that simple? Take some time to ponder this today...I will too.

Life-giving Challenge - Hidden in Your Heart

You know what really works for me? Memorizing scripture by singing it!

Today’s Life-giving Challenge is:

Give life to your soul by memorizing 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. Yes, I know it seems long, but I’ve discovered a trick, and it really works well. Sing it. That’s right, make up your own little tune and sing it throughout the day. This is how I teach my little girl scripture and its worked wonders for me (and I’m tone deaf, seriously!). My husband even makes fun of me because all my scripture songs are starting to sound the same, but you know what, she’s hiding God’s word in her heart. Today, hide God’s will for you in your heart.

Today's Toddler Time - In Their Heart Too

Memorize 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 with your little ones. Make up a song and hand motions that go along with it. Hiding God's word in your child's heart is beyond valuable - it will be life to them.

Now go have fun singing and making up those hand motions!

Random Fact of the Day

Gas in Venezuela costs .17 cents/gallon in U.S. dollars.

Toddler Time - Dance Dance Dance!

This is so much fun! Grab your babes and dance, dance, dance! Spin, twirl, jump, and just go wild! Blast the music and just let yourself go! As an extra benefit, you'll burn calories, so you have an excuse to have some yummy chocolates in the bathtub later!

Today's Life-giving Challenge - Bathroom Funk

Okay, here are my before pics

And After...

So fresh and Clean!

I don't know about you, but I do not enjoy cleaning my bathroom! Mainly because kneeling down beside the toilet with my face practically in the bowl and all kinds of ick in there just doesn't suit me. However, it is a job that must be done. I also find it a little harder because I have an older bathroom and it just doesn't get as clean and sparkly as I'd like, which can seem super discouraging. Nonetheless, here we go!

Today's Life-giving Challenge:

Take everything out of the bathroom and sweep, scrub, mop, and sparkle up that bathroom - let's make it even smell good by lighting a candle.

As your reward, take a nice bubble bath tonight when the kiddos are in bed. If you can, treat yourself to some chocolate while you're in there. Got a good book you've been wanting to pick up for awhile? Take that in there too!

I'll put my before and after pictures up when I've completed my task - will you dare?

I have lost all standards, so go ahead and pour me another cup...

Let me start off by saying that I’m still a relatively new coffee drinker, I’m definitely not at snob level (though getting there slowly but surely). It all started about seven months ago when I gave in at a family late-night game session (settlers!) I decided to try some to keep myself awake, but I’d only try it with that good smelling stuff, hazelnut creamer. One sip and I was hooked. I had managed to steer clear from coffee for twenty-seven years. I was the person who always said, "It will stain your teeth, it’s bad for you, it’s gross." The upside of giving in to the seductive drink was that all these years I thought I was lazy - turned out I was just tired! Go figure! Anyway, now I’m addicted. Completely. Coffee is no longer a drink to me, it’s an experience. I need it, I crave it, and the boundaries I once held dear (only one cup a day) have now fallen off the seat of conviction. I mean, what’s really wrong with ten cups a day anyway? Okay, so I’m not that bad, but ever since I’ve tried the creme brulee creamer, it’s all gone down hill. Coffee stained teeth, smelly breath, and perhaps even an early death. Maybe it’s time I consider weaning myself off.

Are you kidding?!

Pass the creamer.

Do You Know Why We Celebrate Memorial Day?

Did you know...

Memorial Day and Veterans Day have everything to do with honoring the living and the dead. Both observances are intended to honor military personnel, but Veterans Day pays homage to all Americans who have worn the nation’s military uniforms, both living and dead, while Memorial Day is a day to remember all U.S. military personnel who died in wars or other military actions.

On Memorial Day, the American flag is flown at half-staff until noon and then raised to full staff.

Memorial Day was observed initially by placing flowers on the graves of those killed in that national conflict in the 1860s. Until 1971 it was officially observed every year on May 30 but changed to the last Monday in May under the National Holiday Act.

A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. US Eastern time.

The official birthplace of Memorial Day is Waterloo, New York, although Boalsburg, PA claims to be the official birthplace.

Fall-in-Love Friday!

On "Fall-in-Love Friday" we will be talking about date ideas - mainly cheap ways to spend quality time with your man. We want to fall in love with our husbands over and over again. Marriage can get mundane. We can so easily forget to take time out for each other, especially when you have little ones. But, it is so important that we do not neglect our relationship with our husbands - we must put effort into love.

Date Idea:

Go to a local coffee shop with a board game (some coffee shops keep games for you to play), sip on some delicious coffee, have a small snack, and play a game. This is one of my favorite dates. We go and play scrabble, which we are both atrocious at, and just enjoy each other. You can also check when musicians will be playing - there is just something special about playing scrabble over nachos and folk music!

Have a great date idea? Post about it on your blog and then link back to it here so we can all benefit from some fresh date ideas!

Toddler Time - Play Dead

Okay, don't really play dead, but lie down on the floor and let your sweeties crawl all over you and play. Make sure to grab them for some kisses and hugs!

Thanks for the great idea Heidi! I love doing this!

Today's Lifegiving Challenge - What's Lurking in Your Fridge?

One of my favorite things is opening up the refrigerator and seeing what I have that I can actually eat! Most days I open it and it's like making my way through a jungle! Oh, and somehow when my fridge isn't clean, neither is my microwave - they seem to go hand in hand. So...

Today's Lifegiving Challenge is to clean out your fridge and microwave!

Sounds exciting huh? You'll be happy you did! Oh, and I don't just mean clean it out, but scrub it down! Pull everything out and make it look new! Come on, we'll do it together.

Tip:

Put some sliced lemons in a bowl of water and microwave them for 5 minutes. The steam will help get any gook off your wave and the smell of the lemons will be oh so fresh and clean!

What was the grossest thing you ever found in your fridge?
Good morning,

I hear the birds singing, yet there is a lovely stillness to the air, a peace. I hear my little boy waking and I know when I go up to get him he will give me the biggest smile and start crawling away from me in his crib so that I will, "come get you!" My little girl is still sleeping, but the pink side of her blanky is probably up at her nose comforting her. She'll awake soon and just lie there taking in the new day, until she finally says, "hey mommy." Then I'll go in and say, "one...two... three!" and I'll jump in her bed with her and she'll giggle.

Mornings are so great. They are a fresh start; a new beginning. A start to a day where we haven't yelled, used harsh words, or gotten impatient. We have the full day to fill up with love, laughter, training, hugs, kisses, and memories. We can start over. Inevitably, we will fail, but we can be comforted that His mercies are new every morning.

Thank you Lord Jesus for mercies and mornings.

"Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning." Lamentations 3:23

"Tomorrow is always fresh with no mistakes in it!" Anne of Green Gables

Not One Second

This is a post from Ray Comfort's blog, The Soap Box. I just had to pass it on:

You can’t go back one second in time. That’s something that I often think about. It was in the back of my mind recently when our seven grandchildren were running around on our front lawn, as I was about to back my wife’s van out of the driveway. I checked behind the vehicle, then I rolled the window down and asked my grown son if any kids were behind me. They weren’t, so I backed up.

The next morning I found out that a well-known Christian artist lost a five-year-old daughter when his teenage son backed his van up and killed her. What an unspeakable tragedy for the family. It's a horror none of them will ever forget. I'm sure the instant the accident happened, they would have given anything to go back just one second in time.

No doubt the incident shook the faith of some. How could God allow such a thing to happen? Some will even conclude that God must not exist, because of the accident. Yet, being a Christian doesn’t mean that you are immune from the pains of this life. If a Christian is in a tornado, he may be killed, just like a non-Christian. If it rains, he gets wet.

What’s the benefit of trusting in Jesus Christ if we're not protected from the tragedies of this life? I liken it to wearing a parachute in a plane. You experience just as much turbulence as the other passengers. You may even be mocked for wearing a parachute. The flight attendant may spill coffee on you and burn you. But you will see the benefit of wearing it when you jump. One day we all will have to jump--to leave this plane of life and pass through the door of death.

So do as the Bible commands and “put on the Lord Jesus Christ,” and trust Him as you would trust a parachute to save you. Expect a turbulent life. Expect mockers. Just make sure you are ready for the jump into eternity. It can come at any time.

Recipe - Homemade Drippy-Cheese Pizza

You'll need a bread maker to make the dough, unless of course your industrious and all!

Ingredients:
9-11 oz of water
3/4 teaspoons salt
3 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
2 cups mozzarella cheese (but more is always better!)
½ cup cheddar cheese
Italian Seasoning
Garlic Powder
Toppings of your choice

To make:

  • Put the first five ingredients in your bread maker and select the dough setting.
  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
  • Once the dough is finished, put some flour on your hands and pull it out of the bread machine.
  • Work it out to fit on a greased round pizza pan or a large cookie sheet (I use a cookie sheet).
  • Sprinkle garlic powder over the whole thing, paying special attention to the crust.
  • Put the tomato sauce over the dough, spreading out evenly.
  • Sprinkle Italian seasoning over sauce.
  • Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over pizza.
  • Sprinkle cheddar over pizza.
  • Put on your toppings (I like pepperoni and green peppers)
  • Bake for 12 minutes, then broil for 3 minutes.

  • A perfect, drippy-cheese pizza for half the cost of delivery!

Today's Toddler Time - Blow Bubbles!

Get out the bubbles and go crazy! Inside or outside, this is great fun for your toddler. We actually bought an electric bubble blower (I think it was at the dollar store!) and it is so cool! I'm talkin' bubbles galore! You've got to get one if you don't already have one!

    Today's Lifegiving Challenge - You

Sometimes I wish I could turn off my brain. It just keeps going and going and going...

I am always brimming with thoughts, ideas, etc. and sometimes it even causes me to lose sleep! But you know what? I praise God for how He made me, because He chose this brain for me, and intends to use it for His good purposes. So I've decided to thank God for how He made me, instead of being down about all my weaknesses (it's certainly easier to be consumed with our weaknesses than to just enjoy who we are).

    Today's Lifegiving Challenge is:

Sit down in the corner of your couch with a nice warm cup of coffee, a journal, pen, and a humble heart. Write down your thankfulness to God about how He made you, how He chose the intricate parts of your soul, mind, and heart. Give Him the glory for all your strengths and weaknesses. He knew what He was doing when he knitted you together, so warm up in His goodness, and enjoy who YOU are.

Tell us why you are thankful for the unique way He fashioned you.

Spaghetti Straps - Immodest or Cute

I'm really curious as to your opinions on this. I have a poll to the left and I'd love to hear what you have to say!

Putting the Kiddos to Bed Early - This SO Works for Me!

I decided to jump on board Works for Me Wednesday, so here's mine:

I put my little darlings to bed at 6:30pm, and boy does this work for me! I have the whole evening to spend with hubby, to write, read, watch a movie, or do whatever I please! Plus, having my evenings free keeps me sane. I able to face the next day refreshed. Here's how I trained my kids to go to bed early:

    • I bought "The Baby Whisperer Solves all Your Problems" (um, she really does!)

    • Around four months old, I lay down the law. Babes to bed at 6:30pm, even if they cry.

    • My son was easier to train than my daughter, but I learned to keep at it and be consistent - they will go to bed early if you don't give in. Granted, they will get up around 6:30am, but for me it's worth it! (And no, I am not a morning person, but because I am an evening/night person, I would rather sacrifice sleeping in.)

"But my baby just doesn't seem tired." Trust me, they are, at least if you get them up at 6:30am and only give two-hour naps (not only one two-hour nap, but no more than two hours in length in any given nap.)

You may think I sound cold hearted when I say I let them cry, but I do have a nurturing spirit (hello, I'm a mom too!) And yes, I have gone in to their room and held and rocked them when cry and cry, but I don't give up. Both of my babes were very different when I worked with them. I never thought my little Ella would ever go to bed early, but she did, and today, at almost three years old, she still does. My one year old does too.

One more thing. I do want to enjoy my evenings with my children when they get a little older - I even look forward to it.

If you want to have your kids go to bed early, remember, YOU are the parent and YOU set the rules. Be patient, be consistent, try not to get discouraged (it can take awhile!) and your hard work will pay off.

    I'm rooting for you!

Recipe (sort of) - Sprinkle Ball

I was in a pinch today for a snack for my two year old, so I made a "sprinkle ball." This is great when you need a snack on the fly!

    Here's what I did:

    • Take off the crust of a piece of whole wheat bread (healthy)
    • Roll the bread into a ball
    • Wet it
    • Put sprinkles on it

Yea I know, gross huh? She ate two of them! Kiddos love sprinkles, so go ahead, give it a try when you need something on the fly!

    Who is Your Smile For?

"If you have only one smile in you, give it to the people you love. Don't be surly at home, then go out in the street and start grinning "Good morning" at total strangers." Maya Angelou

Today's Toddler Time - Washing Dishes!

Toddlers love washing the dishes. Okay, so they're not exactly washing the dishes (in our dreams, right?) but the concept of getting wet and splashing around in water outside of the bathtub seems to create an almost unparalleled delight. It keeps my two and half year old busy for at least 20 minutes! Here's what to do:
    • Grab a garbage bag and cut out holes for the head and arms

    • Pull a chair up to the sink where your sweetie can stand

    • Fill the sink with luke warm water

    • Throw in any and all plastic dishes, cups, bowls, etc. you can find

    • Go over rules (no splashing, no washing mommy's dishes, etc.)

    Have fun!

"Mommy to Be" List - Learning to Cook!

I am excited to start my journey here online with everyone else around to support me. Being a young married in itself is hard enough, but wanting to master the divine calling of homemaker is a whole different ball game! Sometimes it so ovewhelming thinking about all the things that go into it and all the things I want to learn and accomplish. Thankfully, life is about learning and growing and it doesn't all have to be accomplished in one week. (phew!) I really want to master the skills of homemaking before I have little ones running around because I know it only gets harder from there. So I guess you all can just sit back and watch me learn (or struggle for that matter) because this is the journey of a young wife working her way towards a family and home that honors God.

    My "Mommy to Be" List

Let me tell you about my "Mommy to Be" list. (No I am not pregnant!) These are all just things I would like to accomplish or improve before I start my journey of motherhood. Now, I am well aware that I will never be completely prepared or organized for that matter. However, I feel like girls/women don't seem to really start preparing themselves before children or marriage (like myself!) as perhaps they should. I should have really worked on my homemaking skills before I jumped into marriage, full of endless laundry, dirty toilets, and uncooked meals. I figured, "what's the big deal, how hard could it be right?!" (I give you permission to chuckle to here). So I really want you all to journey with me as I work through this crazy, challenging, but rewarding path to becoming a better homemaker, wife, and (God willing) one day a mommy.

The first thing on my "Mommy to be" list is to accomplish cooking, and I mean delicious finger-licking home cooking, not my usual hamburger helper and french fry casserole. So that means no more excuses, no more "I can't do it." It's time for me to get to that grocery store, get what I need, and get to work. I want to try at least one new recipe in the next week and I need to be held a accountable - thus, I will be posting my progress. So wish me luck, and if you have any great tips for a new wife struggling in the kitchen , I would really appreciate them. I also want to throw a challenge out there to all you wives to try out a new recipe this week and let me know how it goes. I look forward to "hearing" about your progress!

(This post is by Amanda, who will soon have her name appear on the regular "posted by" feature.)

    Today's Life-giving Challenge - Brush Anyone?

I don't know about you, but being a stay-at-home mom can sure put a damper on the looks! It's so easy to throw your hair up without brushing it, leave on your sweats, and stay in a "P.J." rut. Brushing my teeth can even be a challenge (oh come on, am I the only one?) It must make our husbands feel like their not worth much if we don't even put time into ourselves for them. So, today's lifegiving challenge is:

Get yourself together for your man! (And for yourself - you'll feel better, I promise!)

Now, I don't mean just brush your hair and throw on some jeans. Really take the time to look pretty for him. Curl (or in my case, straighten) your hair, put on some makeup (if he likes makeup), get out a stylish outfit, and brush your teeth! When he comes home, greet him with your beautiful self, a smile and a kiss. If your honey isn't used to this, he might say something like, "what do you want?" or "who are you?" But don't let it ruffle you, just grin and say, "because I love you."

    Choosing Love Over Resentment

It is far easier to blame and resent than it is to love. At least it is for me. I am learning how to lay down my pride in order that I may choose love. Recently, my husband, a godly and wise man, and I had a huge disagreement. I wanted very badly to do something that would have cost a large amount of money, but that, in my mind, was completely worth it. He said it was not the best choice for our family, but if I really wanted to do it, than I would have to sacrifice something else I really wanted to do because we couldn’t do both. I wrestled, prayed, cried, fought, and finally, felt at peace about not doing the thing I so badly wanted to do. The issue was resolved, or so I thought. Then today, something sparked the pain I held inside for not doing the thing, and resentment flooded my heart. I blamed my husband, something I promised him I wouldn’t do. I acted horribly towards him, and in response, he showed great insensitivity towards my hurt feelings. We were both upset and stood still in unmoving resentment towards one another. Thankfully, I have been blessed with a wonderful and very wise mother-in-law, who helped me sort through my emotions and see the issue with more clarity. She prayed for me, and it was just what I needed.

No matter how hurt I am, or who is “right” or “wrong,” I know that I must choose to let go of my resentment and love the good man that God gave me. In humility, I will choose love, which requires laying down my life. How hard it can be, but the rewards of grace and forgiveness are certainly sweeter than the constant sting of bitterness.

If you are struggling with resentment or bitterness, here are some suggestions that have helped me:

    • Find someone who you trust and has wisdom to talk things through with.
(I recommend an older, godly woman who has a track record for sage advice)

    • Have a willing spirit to submit in humility to God and the person you’re upset with.

    • Heed the wise, godly advice you receive.

    • Pray before you speak with the person whom has hurt you.

    • Choose an appropriate time to talk when emotions have cooled.

    • Be willing to see your own sin and confess it to the person.

    • Share how you feel and be willing to forgive and love no matter their response.
(this is extremely hard, but if we pray and trust God, we can do it)

    • Don’t bring the issue up again.

    • When emotions arise that make you feel resentful, take them straight to the Lord, confess your continued resentment, and ask for the grace to forgive and let go.

Remember, God chose love with us.

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

Today's Toddler Time - Finger Painting

A great activity for toddlers is finger painting. It’s easy, fun, messy (don’t worry, it's easy clean-up if you follow the below tips), and afterwards you have a beautiful (hey, it’s all in the eye of the beholder) piece of artwork! To get started, you’ll need some finger paints, which, if you don’t have any, will cost you around $5. If you want to make your own, Child Learning Support has a good recipe for homemade finger paints.

    Finger painting tips:

    • Make sure your sweetie is wearing a smock. I just use garbage bags and cut out the holes for the head and arms. Garbage bags also make great tablecloths for under the "art work."

    • For variety, you can chill or warm the paint first.

    • Add salt or sand for texture.

Now go grab your toddler and have some finger painting fun!

This is also a great outside activity!

    Are All Women Lifegivers?

Yes! At least all women have the capacity to be lifegivers if they accept this beautiful calling. Lifegiving, in its most basic sense, is raising life above the level of mere existence. We give life physically and spiritually, in many forms. We also give life intellectually, socially, and artistically. We as women have been blessed with the very nature of lifegiving! At its core, lifegiving is all about love.

What are some specific ways we give life?
    • Our Words

    • Our Home - Decorating, preparing meals, creating an atmosphere of peace, hospitality

    • Education - To yourself, your children, or others

    • Church - Using your gifts

    • Socially

    • Culture and the Arts

    • Heritage and Traditions - Enriching the lives around you

Today, allow the truth to penetrate your heart that you have the ability to give life to your home, your family, and your world! Let it sink in, then live it out!

    Our official debut!

Good morning! We are officially a "go!" As a young (ahem) woman and stay-at-mom with two little ones, I often find myself in desperate need of friendship, help, encouragement, motivation, and a brain! Do you ever feel like this? After stumbling downstairs in the dark before the sun rises (goal), trying not to wake the kiddos, I want to pour myself a strong, smooth cup of coffee (which by the way is more than a drink to me, it’s an experience!), curl up, and with a couple of clicks on the mouse, find the above "needs" to help me begin and get through my day. Don’t get me wrong, my ultimate source of life must come from my "corner in the couch" time with Jesus first thing. He gives me the true rest and refreshment I need to survive on a daily basis. After that however, I want to sit down and read the news, find encouragement, practical, "life giving" tips to bring value to my family and home, creative things to do with my toddler, poetry, art, articles that teach and inspire, date ideas, "how-to’s", and a community of women who understand the ups, downs, and sometimes crazy loops of being a wife and mom. Thus, "Like a warm cup of coffee" was born (or, brewed I should say). It is my genuine desire that this place will be a blessing to you, as well as an outlet. So, grab your cup of joe and let’s journey together!
