10 Days To Modest! Day Two- What Is Modesty? Oh, And A GIVEAWAY!!!

So much excitement I can hardly stand it! First up is the You Don't Have To Be Frumpy To Be Modest blog fashion show (otherwise known as Y.D.H.T.B.F.T.B.M)! On January 15th we (yes we) are going to show the blogosphere that it is possible to be modest and super stylin' cute at the same time! Get your favorite modest outfit (or outfits) together and be prepared to share a picture of you sporting it for your blog. Are you with me?! If so, grab the above button and put it in your sidebar with a link to this post so we can get as many people as possible. I can't wait to see what cute outfits you all have! This fashion show so works for me! (If you don't know how to put the button on your blog or link back here with it, shoot me an e-mail and I'll help ya out!)

Now on to even more exciting news...

A giveaway! Not just any giveaway, but a Christa-Taylor $25 gift certificate giveaway (donated by the gracious Christa herself)! What? You're not familiar with this designer? Well, let me just say that you are MISSING OUT! She is an amazing designer who creates beautiful and modern clothing that is MODEST! See, I told you you don't have to be frumpy to be modest!

Here is one of my favs:

The Peruvian dress - I so wanna rock this!

The rules for entering the contest are at the bottom of today's post, so be sure to check it out!

Moving on to the topic at hand...

What Is Modesty?

Modesty is to merit, what shade is to figures in a picture; it gives it strength and makes it stand out."

Jean de la Bruyere

Modesty is a word that has come to be known as a manner of behavior and/or dress that basically means you are humble in your heart in how you choose to act and dress. For Christians, being modest should mean:

  1. That we as women are aware of the struggles that men have with keeping a pure mind and, in turn, dress and act in such a way that does not promote ungodliness in them,

  2. Finding a balance between the God given feminine quality of beauty without a striving or focus to be the beauty, and...

  3. Standing out from the ungodliness of the world.

Let me say that this type of modesty is a process. I became a Christian at the beginning of college and it has taken me nine years to get to the point I'm at - striving to be modest but still cleaning out my closet year after year as I mature a little more and my eyes are opened to old truths shining forth in the darkness of my sin nature. I can look back at how I used to dress in very immodest ways, even after becoming a Christian, and have compassion on those who do not realize what they are doing.

I am not who I was, and I am not yet who I will be.

Neither are you.

If we are open and willing to submit to godliness, we will be changed...it may take days, weeks, or years. The question to ask yourself is:

Am I willing to be changed?

Tomorrow I want to look at how modesty has everything to do with the very soul of a woman. What God has given women with our bodies is sacred ground, and there are levels of intimacy that we must be aware of if we are to truly pursue a modest and godly lifestyle.

"The women in the church should not look exactly like the ungodly, seductive women in the world. Women in the church are to be different. They should stand out not because of their revealing clothing but because of their distinctly modest heart and dress." C.J. Mahaney

How To Enter The Christa-Taylor $25 Gift Certificate Giveaway:

  1. Go to the Christa-Taylor website and then come back and leave a comment with your favorite piece of clothing from her collection.

  2. To be entered twice, also leave a comment on Christa's blog telling her your favorite piece of clothing from her collection - make sure to let me know you did this! (This would really encourage the wonderful work she does!)
  3. To be entered three times, do the above things and promote this giveaway on your blog.

  4. To be entered four times, do the above things and subscribe to my feed - you can do that here (then you won't have to miss any of the series!) Make sure you also let me know you subscribed. If you are already subscribed, you have an extra entry.

The Contest will end on Friday, January 16th at midnight. The winner will be announced on the following Monday.

*Next week you all will get to know Christa a little better... :)

I like the Gallery Skirt...looks like a cute skirt for Spring! Like the series on modesty...I have a daughter and one on the way and hope to instill principles of modest dress in them without straying into legalism.

Oh this strikes such a cord with me my friend. I have a 15 year old daughter who is trying to be modest in an immodest world. Just the other day she was simply near the end of our driveway taking pictures of flowers when 2 girls coming back from the beach in bikini's, (that she didn't even know), start mocking her. Saying she's fat and ugly. Which she is noways near fat or ugly. Making fun of her clothes etc. I told my daughter that Satan hates the fact that she is living a pure life and is using these girls to try to get to her and make her think twice about her lifestyle. My sinful nature wanted to hunt these girls down and give them a piece of my mind. I'm 6 foot tall and I know they ain't gonna mess with Mamma lol. But I didn't, because I know that we would never win them over if we acted just like them. So I may open my daughters blog so she can participate in this because she tries so hard and living at the beach it isn't always easy. Thank you for this post and I'd love to be entered into the giveaway. Oh and I loved the part where you said that it's not only our dress but the way we act toward men. I had never thought of that but it's so true isn't it? Okay I'm done writing my book.
Hugs to you.
I'm going to go check out the site now.

I don't usually put buttons on my sidebar, but this I'm going to add. What a great idea! Thank you for sharing, and I'm really looking forward to this.

Modesty is so underrated today. :)

I love this fashion show idea! Woo hoo!

Okay, my favorite item from Christa's line is the Magdelene skirt. Too cute!

I left her a comment, AND I already subscribe to you (two ways!), so, does that give me like, 10 entries?

Just kidding. Actually, she doesn't have anything in my size, BUT I have a very sweet babysitter who would ROCK her clothes. : )

Lisa said...

Amazing! My favorite piece, which was hard to choose, was the winter white cool coat. I love creamy white, and one day, will own one...when my babes don't love on me with jelly hands! I left Christa a comment on her blog too!

One of my very favorite books is called, "And the Bride Wore White", by Dannah Gresh. It talks mosty about sexual purity, but along with that comes modesty. I read this book in college, but really wished I had read it in junior high or high school. I have used it as a study with girls in the youth group, and they loved it. I highly recommend this book to anyone with teenage girls. I have saved my copy and plan to read it with my daughter when she gets a little older.

I do love how we are just a work in progress. As long as we are "bendy" for God, He will shape and change us into the daughter that He longs for us to be. Amen!

Loved your message today. I think its so important for us as women to understand the struggle men have....not to be prideful and say that THEY need to deal with it or work out their lusts with God, but to be godly and help them not to stumble. I think its our "job" as the older women to help the younger girls to understand this stuggle. They will more than likely never identify with it, so they need to learn to trust God and how He leads us to dress. I know younger girls struggle with dress b/c they see ungoldy girls get INSTANT attention and they want attention too. Its important for the church to teach them that, even though they see other girls getting attention, its the wrong attention. You want a man to NOTICE you and fall in love with you for who you are in Christ....not because of the skin you show. And definitely, that we as believers want to stand out from the world...and look nothing like them. To represent Christ. Just as we represent our husbands in what we wear...we want to honor God and represent who He is in how we dress. Thanks for all your hard work with this study!

What a great topic to dive into!

This is so relevant in today's world where most Christian's do not realize that our outward appearance is a reflection of our heart.

Great job tackling this topic!!!

*Also, a side note, are the quotes at the end from C.J. Mahaney coming from a book or article on the topic of modesty? Just wondering.

I found the link to Christa's site on your blog several days ago and went to check it out and fell in love with the Jade Yorkshire Missy Skirt! I ordered it and can't wait to get it.

I love that DH tell me that I have redefined femininity for him, he now sees ideal feminine beauty as long hair and long modest dresses. I love to be that example for him and hope that I am being that for others as well.

I've learned over the years that there is almost nothing I can't do in a skirt, from cleaning the house, to mowing the lawn. And just because I'm a SAHM, doesn't mean I can't look nice during the day! :D

I just subscribed to your blog, which I was planning to do anyhow, just found you the other day when someone linked you on the flylady forums, mentioning your 31 Days! I've started them and love them! thanks so much for all you do! I wish I had a blog so I could link you to others... hmmm... maybe I'll mention you on my facebook page!

And thank you so much for sharing Christa's site! It's so hard to pick a favorite, but in the dresses, you've definately got the best pick with that Peruvian dress. My personal favorite is the Dotty Swirl Tunic . . . it looks pretty versatile and being a jeans and t-shirts kinda gal, it would really style up my regular garb. ;)
