So much excitement I can hardly stand it! First up is the You Don't Have To Be Frumpy To Be Modest blog fashion show (otherwise known as Y.D.H.T.B.F.T.B.M)! On January 15th we (yes we) are going to show the blogosphere that it is possible to be modest and super stylin' cute at the same time! Get your favorite modest outfit (or outfits) together and be prepared to share a picture of you sporting it for your blog. Are you with me?! If so, grab the above button and put it in your sidebar with a link to this post so we can get as many people as possible. I can't wait to see what cute outfits you all have! This fashion show so works for me! (If you don't know how to put the button on your blog or link back here with it, shoot me an e-mail and I'll help ya out!)
Now on to even more exciting news...
A giveaway! Not just any giveaway, but a Christa-Taylor $25 gift certificate giveaway (donated by the gracious Christa herself)! What? You're not familiar with this designer? Well, let me just say that you are MISSING OUT! She is an amazing designer who creates beautiful and modern clothing that is MODEST! See, I told you you don't have to be frumpy to be modest!
Here is one of my favs:
Moving on to the topic at hand...
What Is Modesty?
Modesty is to merit, what shade is to figures in a picture; it gives it strength and makes it stand out."
Jean de la Bruyere
Modesty is a word that has come to be known as a manner of behavior and/or dress that basically means you are humble in your heart in how you choose to act and dress. For Christians, being modest should mean:
- That we as women are aware of the struggles that men have with keeping a pure mind and, in turn, dress and act in such a way that does not promote ungodliness in them,
- Finding a balance between the God given feminine quality of beauty without a striving or focus to be the beauty, and...
- Standing out from the ungodliness of the world.
Let me say that this type of modesty is a process. I became a Christian at the beginning of college and it has taken me nine years to get to the point I'm at - striving to be modest but still cleaning out my closet year after year as I mature a little more and my eyes are opened to old truths shining forth in the darkness of my sin nature. I can look back at how I used to dress in very immodest ways, even after becoming a Christian, and have compassion on those who do not realize what they are doing.
I am not who I was, and I am not yet who I will be.
Neither are you.
If we are open and willing to submit to godliness, we will be changed...it may take days, weeks, or years. The question to ask yourself is:
Am I willing to be changed?
Tomorrow I want to look at how modesty has everything to do with the very soul of a woman. What God has given women with our bodies is sacred ground, and there are levels of intimacy that we must be aware of if we are to truly pursue a modest and godly lifestyle.
"The women in the church should not look exactly like the ungodly, seductive women in the world. Women in the church are to be different. They should stand out not because of their revealing clothing but because of their distinctly modest heart and dress." C.J. Mahaney
How To Enter The Christa-Taylor $25 Gift Certificate Giveaway:
- Go to the Christa-Taylor website and then come back and leave a comment with your favorite piece of clothing from her collection.
- To be entered twice, also leave a comment on Christa's blog telling her your favorite piece of clothing from her collection - make sure to let me know you did this! (This would really encourage the wonderful work she does!)
- To be entered three times, do the above things and promote this giveaway on your blog.
- To be entered four times, do the above things and subscribe to my feed - you can do that here (then you won't have to miss any of the series!) Make sure you also let me know you subscribed. If you are already subscribed, you have an extra entry.
The Contest will end on Friday, January 16th at midnight. The winner will be announced on the following Monday.
*Next week you all will get to know Christa a little better... :)

Loved the Orchid Weave Dress (and told her so on her blog). I can't wait to be unpregnant and able to wear cute dresses again : 0
You are soo right modesty is a heart issue. Great post on it~
Since I have to pick one dress from Christa's I would have to say it's the Turquoise Cecily Embroidered Dress. Too cute!
I'm leaving a message on her blog as well.
~Cinnamon
Oh yeah, and I subscribed to your blog ages ago ...
I'm already subscribed to your blog and I know I can't be in the draw because I'm in Australia but my favourite was the "Stardust" dress because it would be a good one to work (teach) in. I'm also leaving a message on Christa's blog.
I like the Gallery Skirt...looks like a cute skirt for Spring! Like the series on modesty...I have a daughter and one on the way and hope to instill principles of modest dress in them without straying into legalism.
Oh this strikes such a cord with me my friend. I have a 15 year old daughter who is trying to be modest in an immodest world. Just the other day she was simply near the end of our driveway taking pictures of flowers when 2 girls coming back from the beach in bikini's, (that she didn't even know), start mocking her. Saying she's fat and ugly. Which she is noways near fat or ugly. Making fun of her clothes etc. I told my daughter that Satan hates the fact that she is living a pure life and is using these girls to try to get to her and make her think twice about her lifestyle. My sinful nature wanted to hunt these girls down and give them a piece of my mind. I'm 6 foot tall and I know they ain't gonna mess with Mamma lol. But I didn't, because I know that we would never win them over if we acted just like them. So I may open my daughters blog so she can participate in this because she tries so hard and living at the beach it isn't always easy. Thank you for this post and I'd love to be entered into the giveaway. Oh and I loved the part where you said that it's not only our dress but the way we act toward men. I had never thought of that but it's so true isn't it? Okay I'm done writing my book.
Hugs to you.
I'm going to go check out the site now.
Kim
I love the crocheted sweater! Beautiful!! What a great topic to blog about. Thanks for your insight.
Oh I just checked out her blog. Such lovely things. I really like the Academy Red Skirt. It's so cute!

This is so true. There is so much more to it, though, which is why there are 8 days left in the modesty series! Ha ha! Thank you for doing this! :)
I am going to check out Christa's site right now. I could definately use the shot at an extra piece of clothing. You know what it's like being a mom...you always put yourself last. ;) Thank God He makes our clothes last!
Ok I posted the giveaway on my blog! :)
Love the Swingy McBride Tunic.... all the tunics for that matter! I love her style and since I have 3 young girls, I am excited to see that a designer has made clothing that is fun, fashionable and modest! And the prices are great too! I posted a comment on her blog too!
Ok my first entry was based on being signed up for the feed, because I forgot to mention it *blush*. It's still early! :-P
I left a comment on Christa's blog. She gives some great tips there! I'll have to keep her blog on my list! :) Thanks Sarah Mae!
Great post and I continue to look forward to reading more from you!
What cute and stylish clothes! It was kind of hard to choose but I kinda have a thing for coats, so I am choosing the pea green ( I also love green!) coat. Headed over to make a comment on Christa's blog...
I cannot wait to show this to my daughter....yes stylish, AND modest! YAY!
I've already subscribed to your blog, and I will blog about this, too! Thanks so much SM!!

I don't usually put buttons on my sidebar, but this I'm going to add. What a great idea! Thank you for sharing, and I'm really looking forward to this.
Modesty is so underrated today. :)
I love this fashion show idea! Woo hoo!
Okay, my favorite item from Christa's line is the Magdelene skirt. Too cute!
I left her a comment, AND I already subscribe to you (two ways!), so, does that give me like, 10 entries?
Just kidding. Actually, she doesn't have anything in my size, BUT I have a very sweet babysitter who would ROCK her clothes. : )
Amazing! My favorite piece, which was hard to choose, was the winter white cool coat. I love creamy white, and one day, will own one...when my babes don't love on me with jelly hands! I left Christa a comment on her blog too!
One of my very favorite books is called, "And the Bride Wore White", by Dannah Gresh. It talks mosty about sexual purity, but along with that comes modesty. I read this book in college, but really wished I had read it in junior high or high school. I have used it as a study with girls in the youth group, and they loved it. I highly recommend this book to anyone with teenage girls. I have saved my copy and plan to read it with my daughter when she gets a little older.
I do love how we are just a work in progress. As long as we are "bendy" for God, He will shape and change us into the daughter that He longs for us to be. Amen!
Thanks for the Modesty series! I can't wait to lose baby weight from #3, it feels good to be at a weight you feel comfortable in. getting there soon!
I LOVE the Cherry Marseilles Island dress! SOO cute. I'm posting your button to my blog and linking to her site on both my blogs. -Melissa

Hi, Sara Mae!
This is my first time visiting your blog...I actually found it from a link on www.empoweredtraditionalist.com. My favorite item from Christa's site is the Lily Boucle Tunic...but the Black Tailored Shirtdress came in a close second. :)

Just gave a shout out to you on my blog. Word. lol
My favorite is also the Peruvian dress, but it's so hard to choose!
Loved your message today. I think its so important for us as women to understand the struggle men have....not to be prideful and say that THEY need to deal with it or work out their lusts with God, but to be godly and help them not to stumble. I think its our "job" as the older women to help the younger girls to understand this stuggle. They will more than likely never identify with it, so they need to learn to trust God and how He leads us to dress. I know younger girls struggle with dress b/c they see ungoldy girls get INSTANT attention and they want attention too. Its important for the church to teach them that, even though they see other girls getting attention, its the wrong attention. You want a man to NOTICE you and fall in love with you for who you are in Christ....not because of the skin you show. And definitely, that we as believers want to stand out from the world...and look nothing like them. To represent Christ. Just as we represent our husbands in what we wear...we want to honor God and represent who He is in how we dress. Thanks for all your hard work with this study!

The sgmsurvivors blog questions some of what Mahaney teaches on modestly.
Hope this helps.
I love all her clothes. I really love the swim suit. I have never been able to find a swimsuit I want to wear outside. How do I leave a post on her blog without commenting on a specific post? I would like to do this but I don't know how. I will be linking this on my blog and I am already subscribed to your blog.
Loved Loved Loved the Pickadilly Jacket (as I am right now obsessed with coats and jackets) and would someday love the White Wool coat when I am brave enough to wear white!! I did leave her a comment to let her know how much I loved her line!! I also subsribed to your feed and posted the giveaway and linked it to you so MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! Thank you so much for this awesome Modesty study! Your blog is so encouraging to me...thank you!!
Hello! I left a comment for Christa, but I'm also happy to share with you that I love the double breasted jacket and the bib jacket. I'll definitely be back to check out her store, and I'm enjoying your modesty posts! Take care.
I love the Winter White Double Breasted Coat.
Love the Corduroy Tuxedo Dress...really pretty much love all her things. I love even more that you are doing this piece on modesty. I think women so need to be reminded the influence we have in this area.
Sarah Mae, good luck to you on your fashion show!
What a great topic to dive into!
This is so relevant in today's world where most Christian's do not realize that our outward appearance is a reflection of our heart.
Great job tackling this topic!!!
*Also, a side note, are the quotes at the end from C.J. Mahaney coming from a book or article on the topic of modesty? Just wondering.
-Ashley
there are so many great things on this website! i'm loving the gren crocheted sweater though! :) thanks Sarah Mae!
and i'm a subscriber :)
I love the White Kenziegirl dress!! Feminine and cute :-)

I left a comment over at Christa's site! I don't have a blog, though I'm thinking about starting one. Maybe I'll do it in time! :)
I love the ruffled lace tunic! I left a comment on her CT blog and I subscribed to yours.
So 3 for me!
I found the link to Christa's site on your blog several days ago and went to check it out and fell in love with the Jade Yorkshire Missy Skirt! I ordered it and can't wait to get it.
I love that DH tell me that I have redefined femininity for him, he now sees ideal feminine beauty as long hair and long modest dresses. I love to be that example for him and hope that I am being that for others as well.
I've learned over the years that there is almost nothing I can't do in a skirt, from cleaning the house, to mowing the lawn. And just because I'm a SAHM, doesn't mean I can't look nice during the day! :D
I just subscribed to your blog, which I was planning to do anyhow, just found you the other day when someone linked you on the flylady forums, mentioning your 31 Days! I've started them and love them! thanks so much for all you do! I wish I had a blog so I could link you to others... hmmm... maybe I'll mention you on my facebook page!
-Kym

HOnestly, I love the Peruvian Dress the best too. But I also love the houndstooth coat and the tuscana cord skirt. Love the hats...love the site. Eye candy. And I love that it is modest clthing choices. I get so sick of seeing "stuff" hanging out ...I would much prefer my daughter learn the sexiness of modesty! Great post!
I left her a comment on her blog too.
Thank you so much for posting this! I just LOVE the clothes and I'll be a customer for sure! It's hard to pick a favorite, but the Canvas Bib Jacket is fantastic and I could totally use something like that!
I also commented on her blog and subscribed to your blog. (Although, I used to be a subscriber earlier last year, then canceled because of time issues, and resubscribed tonight. So, if you don't count that, I understand!)
Thanks a lot! Great series about modesty!
Hey girl! Just wanted to let you know that I included your series in my post today.
I love Christa's clothing! Especially that houndstooth coat.
Kimba
I LOVE the CT Classic Swimsuit. It's all the romance and modesty of an earlier era, but with updated style so it doesn't seem outdated. It's so cute! I want one!
Wow, such cute clothes! These are really appealing and cute, and well priced as well. My favorites were the gallery skirt and double-breasted sailor jacket. Hard to narrow it down.
Just left a comment for Christa!
Just subscribed! I came here today from A Soft Place to Land. I love finding new blogs I enjoy!
This sentence really hits the nail on the head for me: "I am not who I was, and I am not yet who I will be." So much to take in and contemplate!
And thank you so much for sharing Christa's site! It's so hard to pick a favorite, but in the dresses, you've definately got the best pick with that Peruvian dress. My personal favorite is the Dotty Swirl Tunic . . . it looks pretty versatile and being a jeans and t-shirts kinda gal, it would really style up my regular garb. ;)
I also visited Christa's blog and left a comment. So much wonderful style information! Maybe I can step up from my frumpy housewife style to something a little more fashionable. Great site!
I LOVE the dotty-swirl tunic! http://www.christa-taylor.com/p/modest-tops/kenziegirl_dotty-swirl-tunic_top_08/

I love Christa's gallery skirt. I left a comment on her blog and also subscribed!

I love the Cultured Cabbie hat! (I told Christa too)
Hope I win!
I love her Jade Missy Lane skirt (and shared that with her on her blog). The pop of color with the funky asymmetrical hem - so fun! Love the theme on modesty. Such a need for that today!
I found this through SimplyVintageGirl's blog. Christa Taylors designs are lovely! Lead Kenziegirl dress would have to be my favorite - I love the color and the lines. Commented on her blog and now intend to post on mine!
The Minuet Denim Skirt is absolutely SO cute!! It is so increasingly hard to modest attire in the stores these days...

I love Christa Taylor. A gift card would be so nice. I already commented on her site. My favorite I'm already subscribed to you. And my favorite is the paris trench.
It is SO nice to hear a post like this online. And I loved how you defined modesty. . . especially the part about helping men keep clean thoughts, obviously it's not completely a woman's fault if they think that way, but it's better to help them avoid those thoughts--for SURE! And cute dresses--I already have a ton of clothes, though :D
I love, love, love this idea! I'm so glad I just found you're blog! I'm definitely going to participate. My husband and I are youth pastors and this is a heartbeat of mine. I've been wanting to do a real-life modesty fashion show with our girls for a while. This has inspired me all over again! THANKS! :)
My favorite isn't exactly clothing, but it is the Winter White Double Breasted Wool Coat :-D
My favorite? I've been drooling over the Pickadilly Jacket for ages now. (And, of course, every single one of her skirts... SUPER cute!)

I really like the peruvian dress you posted and I also like the plum tunic, and the mysterious red hat on the model on the home page. I couldn't find it under "accessories" though. :(
My favorite would have to be the white eyelet skirt that's on clearance. It's adorable!
